Purpose

In this life, there are many trials and troubles besetting the Christian. Although a believer is completely secure and will go to heaven, there are many enemies such as: Satan, the world, and our own sinful nature that fight against us. Against this triad of evil, we cannot fight against them on our own. We are helpless and will fail in this war. Yet our Lord has given us a powerful weapon. In the Old Testament we read, “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces (Jeremiah 23:29)?” And in the New Testament we read, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).”

My purpose is to bring together a whole host of verses from God’s Word that will remind the Christian once again that they are not helpless, they are not without divine protection, and they are not without hope! God cannot lie, and He says so, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good (Numbers 23:19)?” What God has spoken will be done with all speed, alacrity, and finality. Basically, you can literally bet your very life on what God has said in His Word!

This is not a complete list – far from it. But it touches on some very important points. Not the least of which is the answer to these question of questions, “Who am I?” and “To whom do I belong?” In short, I have striven to bring together answers this most important question, “Why am I here?” It is a matter of identity. I have found many, many, many people wandering aimlessly about in this life. They have no identity, no direction, no purpose, and no hope. For these people, life is one big empty vessel, which they cannot fill! Only God, YHWH, can fill this need of ours.

Therefore, read these verses slowly, and reverently. Get your bible out and read the context in which these are taken from. Read them over and over and over again. Memorize them! As it is written, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you (Psalm 119:11).”

5.      This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. (1 John 3:16, NIV)

6.      This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. (I John 4:9, NIV)

7.      This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins (I John 4:10, NIV)

8.      But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

9.      But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5, NIV)

6.      Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry for ever but delight to show mercy. (Micah 7:18, NIV)

10.  When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. (Colossians 2:13-14, NIV)

11.  And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. (Exodus 34:6-7)

7.      Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. (Romans 5:16, NIV)

8.      Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. (Romans 5:17, NIV)

9.      "We who are Jews by birth and not ‘Gentile sinners’ know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no-one will be justified. (Galatians 2:15-16, NIV)
